| In
2005, Tommy Thompson (Secretary of Health & Human Services), along
with his committee came out with a new set of dietary guidelines—the
first change in nine years. Some of the guidelines are as follows:
- Measure
food in cups and not servings.
- Eat a
diet rich in fruit (2 cups) and vegetables (2.5 cups).
- Limit
saturated and trans-fats.
- Limit
salt to one-teaspoon per/day.
- Increase
low-fat dairy from 2-3 cups.
- Increase
whole grains, oats, and wheat, even popcorn, instead of refined grains
found in most baked-goods. (The critics say that the new guidelines
are to serve the food lobbyist and not the public health.)
- For the
first time the new guidelines stress exercise: 30 minutes a day for
the average American.
- We're
talking about eating less and exercising more.
